The large complex feels dedicated to athletes, fit families and kids.. it is full of all the amenities a triathlete could wish for and it looked pretty good fun for the kids too with massive play slides, kids sports and endless group activities.
I arrived on a very early morning (6.20am) Ryanair flight from London Stansted and to keep things simple (but perhaps not the cheapest) I got straight in a taxi to Las Playitas. The journey is 45mins and the airport is pretty quick with luggage and bikes.
Once I arrived at lunch time they were pretty strict with check in time of 3pm so I took myself off to the 50m Olympic Swimming Pool for my first session of the day. I came back and got a lift up to my room with my luggage.. thank goodness, a fair few steps to get up to Block 4! I was really happy when I got into the room, lots of space, big bathroom, bath and shower, balcony, working TV and a fantastic view of the sea.
Bike built and clothes unpacked I was then getting ready for my run session. There are numerous trails and plenty of challenging hills and also the “Red Road” for running. There is also the “Lighthouse Run” a challenging uphill run on very quiet roads.. perfect for a longer early morning run.
The resort is split into the Hotel (where I stayed up the hill looking over the sea), ApartHotel (more focused towards the kiddies) and Pool Villas (situated on the golf course set back from the beach). Both the Hotel and ApartHotel have their own pool, bar and restaurant. Diner is served from 6.45pm and you are spoilt for choice, there is a fantastic variety of food on offer and each night the selection changes every evening. I went for the half board option and I certainly felt this was excellent value. One evening I was enjoying a glass of Spanish wine, Lamb, sweet potatoes and fresh vegetables and the next night I was enjoying a fresh mixture of Mexican flavours and spices. Dessert is always a popular area of the expansive buffet with a wide selection of fruits, nuts, ice cream and the more indulgent cakes and bakes.
Breakfast is served from 7.30am and again a fantastic variety of foods served fresh and topped up throughout the morning until 10.30am. I would ofter get a banana and some yoghurt pre swim and then enjoy a bigger breakfast later in the morning to prepare for the training day ahead.
I quickly became very efficient with my timings and planning of big training days to reduce the amount of times needed to go back and forth to my room as there was a lot of steps to get to Block 4. I would often combine a run and gym session or a gym and relaxation in the spa before diner.
The staff at Las Playitas are very welcoming and are quick to answer any questions. The booking of my taxi home and my luggage collection was super easy and I am now sat in the airport with plenty of time to spare. I am very happy with Las Playitas as a training location and I would definitely come back again. Whether, like me, so have a block of training to get done and then going to Las Playitas on your own is fine, I was happy to meet with Cat after being there for 1 week however, lovely to have a friendly face for company. If you are planning a group trip with friends and family then even better.. you can all enjoy the fantastic facilities together!
